Perspective

Part of the problem in sorting out what’s going on in the Global War on Terror, is understanding the different types of terrorists out there. But even more important, to grasp the conflict inside the United States, is to understand the two basic ideas held by political parties and the population.
Conservatives and the Republican Party understand the nature of the conflict; that to advance freedom and establish a truly stable framework for nations, it is necessary to eradicate Global Terrorism as a threat. We must take it seriously, and we must recognize that our enemy is implacable, and cannot be persuaded to accept peace. We believe he means what he says, and so when he exclaims that he is willing to die, if he can kill us as well, we accept the threat as real, and meet it with all the force we can muster, to the end of protecting the innocent and wiping out any base or resource he holds, without hesitation or remorse.
The Democrats and Liberals are in the minority position. They honestly do not understand the threat, noting that statistically, an American is far more likely to die in an auto accident than in a terrorist act. What the Liberal and the Democrat miss, is that the chances of dying in a car accident are also rather small overall, yet we insist on safety measures and practices, like restraints and air bags, even as we hope to avoid the accident. When an entire organization exists for the purpose of killing as many Americans as they can, it is only reasonable to act to prevent them from accomplishing such a goal. And when such a group predates the current President, it is a bit silly to assume his policies are the source of their hatred.
It needs to be said, obvious as it is, over and over again: We are winning in Iraq. The evidence can be seen in the January elections, the increase in men joiing up with the Iraqi Army and Police, and more, in the changes shown by surrounding nations. The Democrats make much use of their favorite false analogy, comparing Iraq to Vietnam. It is useful in that sense, to note that none of South Vietnam’s neighbors attempted to become more like Vietnam, but a number of Arab nations have taken steps to show alliance with the Coalition, and to curry favor with the Americans.
One last point for today. In the Middle East, there are a lot of people expressing opinions, whether it’s Iranian mullahs or Lebanese students. The name they all mention, whether in spite or praise, is not any Democrat, not even Clinton. It’s George W. Bush. That is just one more sign that it’s his signal which sets the pace and direction, and it is therefore under his Administration, that this nation would most wisely confirm its support.
