For the benefit of all who follow this thread, it is important to note that the ATM standard is a work in progress. Portions of the ATM standard are incomplete and remain to be determined. ATM manufacturers are using programmable "soft" solutions to design equipment today, that is future-proof and that can been upgraded seemlessly, as the ATM standard evolves.

ATM manufacturers do NOT use "general purpose processors" in the high speed data path. A general purpose processor would be used in the part of the ATM switch that performs system monitoring and control functions; these are low-speed functions, relatively speaking.
