>MOT shipping their modems is simply stategy. Get your product on the shelves (at cheaper prices too) and hope that at least half (or more) of the people that buy a 56k modem will be trapped with your standard (even if you won't be able to use 56k for several months).

Any consumer unfortunate enough to leave the store with a MOT 56k modem will return it in exchange for USRX x2 when they realize they can't talk to anyone with MOT. Also, people buying over the next few weeks are early adaptors who will be aware of the standards issue. I also question whether MOT will have any modems available in significant quanities.

I think MOT is running scared. They are getting burned in the cell-phone market, CPU market, and now the modem market. I think this recent announcement is second-rate FUD inspired by desperation.
