The money people know much more than the average investors, therefore if you want to short a stock, check first what the money people think the direction of the stock. There is no foolproof way to have that info, but there is a rule of thumb that you help you decide whether to short a stock:

If there is no share available to short, the environment is favorable to short the stock (check again the following day). If there are plenty of shares available, think again about shorting the stock.

The money people will borrow all the available shares (yes that might include your shares in margin account) if they suspect the stock is heading south. You might not even be able to short against the box.

So, one way to check is: if you want to short 100 sh of CMGI, ask your broker if they have 1000 sh availabe for shorting. If they say yes, forget it. If they say that theyonly have 100 shares, the chances are better that you will come out ahead.

The above is not a foolproof method and not intended as investment advice.
