You guys are hard to argue with because your points keep changing. Let's clear some up:

1) I did not "alter(ed) your (my) wife's relationship to the labor market". I gave her some encouragement. SHE altered her relationship with the labor market by getting a job. I don't even know if I helped, but I do know her mom's message did not. And it is amazingly similar to the messages that the dems give to their constituents daily.

2) "but that doesn't mean you control all circumstances"
I never said I could. I can control everything that I can control, and that is it. Combine what you can control with hard work and perserverance and you would be surprised at what a human can accomplish.

3)"If you had been born a French peasant in the year 1000"
I wasn't. This is an example of why I am LUCKY to be an Amercian.

4) "Do you still say that success=hard work for the French peasant"
I did not say "success=hard work". People that are successful do have a tendency to work hard though. The prevailing lib position on the thread is that luck is the primary ingredient in success. Success also seems to be tied more to how much money you make or how big your house is to you guys. Let's say that we view success differently. I think it is more related to your inner peace and happiness, and not on wheter you toil for Intel or for Dole foods. You (or at least Patricia and Kevin) seem to feel that working in a field = sadness and despair, working in cube in the burbs for microtechylogic with a big house = happiness. This gives me insight into why you THINK you are qualified to "help" these poor unhappy soles.

And last but not least, where did you come up with this LIE:

"why is it so hard to admit that the children of migrant laborers face external circumstances that make success much harder to achieve for them than it was for you and me"

Here is what I did say: "There is luck, and some people are very lucky. It in NO WAY is a "very large component".

The people I admire the most are the ones that make the most progress from where they have started. If Bill Gate's kid ends up running Microsoft (a very lofty position) I would not be nearly as impressed as a kid from the getto managing the automotive department at Sears. On the other hand I will be impressed with Bill's kid IF he runs Microsoft well. Many here will not like him either way as they tend to look DOWN on people that were born into well to do families (a form of prejudice, right?)

My biggest hero and someone who takes on almost a saintly or Godly quality for me is Bob Marley. Born in the jungle to a mom that was ditched by a white sailor, he scrapped himself to the top of the music world with grit and determination that is astonishing. All the while sending a message of love and hope with a FIGHTING spirit against TRUE social injustices (not the drivel most libs fight for today). He did not tell people they could not make it, he said FIGHT for what is RIGHT.

What was strange is that he was not embraced by the black community in America. Not sure why.
