This process happens to both parties. The Reps are being driven by their hard right but Bush has been able to conceal that, even though he governs from there. Clinton did not govern from a hard right--he's one of the founders of the DLC.

My problem with these analyses is the right wing location of the writer, in this case, and that the argument leaves out the large number of nonvoters, which are mostly Dem voters. If the Dems could find a way to get those folk to the polls, plus their activists, plus the various population elements John Judis points to in his book, you have the serious makings of another Roosevelt style dominance.

I think there are only two things keeping the Reps alive right now: the uncanny ability of Rove to keep the hard right governing stance of Bush from the public view and the failure of the Dems to have a credible answer on national security issues. I know that's an odd thing to say, given Bush's numbers.
