Why the anti-fascist, anti-racist themes of ‘The Twilight Zone’ are more relevant today than ever

At the close of 1960 “The Twilight Zone” episode “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street,” aliens observe from afar as a small town descends into chaos. Rather than invading and attacking the citizens, the aliens cut off the power on the ordinary “Anytown, USA” street, leaving the citizens alone with each other and their increasing paranoia. Panic sets in and the citizens turn on one another, attacking and killing their neighbors. Successful in their quest, the aliens float away in their spacecraft.

“The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout,” says narrator Rod Serling in the closing epilogue. “There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices, to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill, and suspicion can destroy.”........
