One of the key lessons I have learned as I have observed changes in technology over the past 10 years is that it is ultimately the consumer who determines the winners and the losers. No matter what the technology press and the financial analysts forecast and no matter how superior or inferior the technology is, the success of a new technology is determined by how well it is accepted in the market place.

As an investor in U.S. Robotics, I couldn't care less if 500 other modem companies form a consortium or if the U.N. passes a 56K modem resolution and neither includes U.S. Robotics. The success or failure of U.S. Robotics at growing its company this year depends soley on the ability of U.S. Robotics to execute its strategy (which includes its x2 rollout).

If one does want to play mind games, it seems to me that the frantic effort by the competition to mount an offense against x2 should be viewed as a strong positive. The Rockwell based modem manufacturers have to be running scared. Their sales are way down and it will be probably 2, if not 3, months before Rockwell modem consumers will be able to connect at x2 speeds.
