Hawk,
Actually the whole Middle East crisis is very straightforward.... What Palestinians demand is a viable state with East Jerusalem as their capital and a relative sovereignty on all their land --including Jewish colonies-- after a transitory period, and that's it.
What Israelis want is even simpler indeed: Israelis want to "negotiate", "negotiate" again, "negotiate" all the time.... What's to be negotiated is really of no great matter to the Israelis, as it is also of no matter whomever they'll negotiate with... Israelis just want to keep on "negotiating" and, as they eventually realize that both the Americans and the Palestinians can no longer be duped into their negotiating thimblerig/boondoggle, they pathetically try to pin the rap on Yasser Arafat. They scramble to personalize the whole mess as the alleged deviousness of a single individual, namely, the historical leader of the Palestinian cause, hence their current demonizing campaign against Arafat.
