Regards big spreads, check out options on QQQQ and SPY, spreads are very narrow, and volume is great. I basically no longer trade stock options for the reason you mentioned, wide spreads, and often low liquidity.

I will sometimes trade the DIA IWM and XAU options, but they are not as liquid.
