Frank Rich Applauds Sheehan's "Insurgency at Home"

Frank Rich admirably managed to make it through his latest column without a single reference to Watergate, Vietnam or McCarthyism. Without those comforting historical touchstones, however, Rich seems more lost than ever. Consider the following paragraph:

The hope this time was that we'd change the subject to Cindy Sheehan's "wacko" rhetoric and the opportunistic left-wing groups that have attached themselves to her like barnacles. That way we would forget about her dead son. But if much of the 24/7 media has taken the bait, much of the public has not.

In Frank Rich's fantasy world, the "media" are painting Sheehan as a wacko, but the "public" still supports her. In real life, the media have portrayed Sheehan as nothing more than a grieving mom, a "soft-spoken woman on a quest for answers." And as Eric Pfeiffer reported last week, more people view Sheehan unfavorably than favorably — particularly those with family members who have served in the military.

Merely getting his facts wrong isn't enough for Rich. He has to go ahead and call Sheehan and her band of followers "the insurgency at home." I would actually say this is a rare moment of insight for Rich, as this pretty much describes Cindy "Bush is the worst terrorist" Sheehan. His column calls for us to forget about Sheehan's wacko rhetoric — maybe he's trying to get us to focus on his own.
