Because Israel is a democracy. That form of government spells a loss of power for the Muslim clerics. The latter are accustomed to holding complete control of the Muslim masses in the MidEast...they fear Israel's democratic system will spread to their unenlightened flock, thereby weakening their theocratic monopoly of power.
