"All I know is that when a stock is downgraded it moves down. When a stock is upgraded the stock moves up. In either case only the brokerage industry benefits from the trading of the shares in both directions. With that simple logic, you have captured the motivational mechanics of stock manipulation. All large brokerage firms hire their own inhouse analysts and Market Makers. We all know that these charitable firms and their associated individuals would never think of buying before an upgrade or selling short before a downgrade---that would be unfair and highly unethical, and we all know that huge profits could never be a motive for such behaviour in that den of saints. ps-for those avowed conspiracyphobes, ask yourself this question: If you received a tip from a friend that major analysts were about to downgrade or upgrade a stock, would you act on the inforamtion? Remember, your inner sanctium is probably far holier than these men whose consciences have been calloused by repetitive unheeded warnings. Emile
