Ascend's technology beats out the competition including X2 in Byte Magazine comparison. I have the actual article at home and the 56Kx actually outperformed all the US Robotic's models in their tests. It's even cheaper:

( BW)(ZOOM)(ZOOM) Zoom/FaxModem 56Kx Named "Byte Best" and "Overall
Winner"

Business/Technology Editors

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 18, 1997--

Zoom's Third Major 56K Industry Award in 2 Months

The Zoom/FaxModem 56Kx received a "BYTE BEST" award in Byte
Magazine's October '97 review of thirty-four 56K modems. The Zoom
56Kx was one of only two modems named a "BYTE BEST."
"Besting not only its K56flex companions, but the entire x2
field as well, the Zoom Telephonics 2849-PC (56Kx) external modem was
our overall winner. Its top performance score was boosted by above
average usability," stated the review. "Solid usability and feature
scores helped ensure both modems (the Zoom 56K internal and the 56Kx)
a first-row finish."
"We are pleased to have received this recognition by highly
regarded Byte Magazine," said Frank Manning, Zoom's President and
CEO. "Our 56Kx has also received a `Tester's Choice' award from Data
Communications Magazine (8/97) and a `BUY IT' award from CNET (9/97).
These reviews and our free ITU 56K software upgrade program confirm
that Zoom's new 56K products deliver the outstanding performance,
usability, and value associated with the Zoom brand name."
This is the second time this year a Zoom product was named a
"BYTE BEST." In March '97 the Zoom/FaxModem V.34X Plus also received
the award.
The current street prices of the Zoom 56K (internal) and 56Kx
(external) are approximately $119 and $139, respectively. The
current street price of the U.S. Robotics Courier V.Everything
external, the other "BYTE BEST" winner, is $275. The lower priced
U.S. Robotics Sportster, the USR model most commonly found in
retail stores, was not submitted for review.
The Byte evaluations were based on test results from the
respected National Software Testing Laboratory (NSTL). Byte
(http://www.byte.com) is published monthly by the McGraw-Hill
Companies.
