Mailer's comments are fascinating ..... "Indeed, democracy is the special condition - a condition we will be called upon to defend in the coming years. That will be enormously difficult because the combination of the corporation, the military and the complete investiture of the flag with mass spectator sports has set up a proto-fascistic atmosphere in America already." This country is at a crossroads. I find this blind, hideous patriotism exhibited through flags on virtually all college sports uniforms to be insane. I have associated flag waving as shallow ever since the late 1960s. It simply implies "America Love It or Leave It." Remember those bumper stickers? Bush has used 9/11 as a pathetic rally of blind patriotism. With it comes the philosophy that if one disagrees with administration policies he is disloyal and, arguably, unpatriotic. That is really the origin of totalitarianism. /john
