David,

I'm sorry that I can't help you much. I'm a UNIX user but I'm not entirely familiar with the O/S. It's quite a complex beast compared to Windows and I usually leave the details to our trained staff of support technicians.

From my point of view the main value of UNIX is its robustness. In over ten years of running UNIX workstations I've only had the machines hang on a few occassions. Some of those could probably have been avoided with a little more care.

To get more information on how to manage the operating system I would simply refer you to a host of good books on the subject that you can find at a decent bookstore such as Barnes & Noble. If you have specific questions you could probably get answers from one of the Unix oriented newsgroups on the Internet such as comp.language.os.unix or similar.

Good luck.
