If more Americans actually paid attention to the politics and had more straight info about a candidate, then we might have some hope of finding a strong candidate without baggage. But most of the baggage dredged up is actually of a personal nature so normally why would we care. If the person is stealing (Berger) or a drunk (Kennedy) or given to rages (McCain?, Hillary - we've seen it) that's entirely another thing altogether.
