A last resort only (g)

I have read that all cars made since 1997 have some hidden devices.
Like a crash impact reorder that records the last one second of brake position and speed,etc. Lawyers like that one.
Also an indication that some unauthorized person has fiddled with the emission control systems.

Combine those with the EPA smog checks that read exhaust emissions on cars traveling at highways speeds and the home experimenter is pretty much out of business- except for us country boys.
