Al Gore volunteered. John Kerry did

You have starnge heroes.

I have never seen any evidence that Gore volunteered for combat duty. I have seen evidence that he was sent to Vietnam on short notice, applied to divinity school at Vanderbilt shortly after arriving and left after 5 months to attend a school he did not complete.

Unlike Gore, Kerry did request combat duty, but after three months requested to be relieved because of three slight wounds. And he was relieved after 4 months total. Kerry is the only US Naval Officer I know of to ever abandon his men and his ship in combat because he was slightly wounded.
