Joe & Jim: he does not realize that telco line conditions prevent connection at much better than 26Kbs regardless of the rating of the modem because analog doesn't fare all that well over the copper lines.
My source for this is PC World's November issue which tested a bunch of 28.8 & 33.3 modems and made the statement I've paraphrased above. You can read the report at:

I've clued Herb into this interesting bit of factual data on analog modems - so Ejabat is right because in the real world the speed users will get out of a 56.6K modem will be a far cry from the rated speed - that's available only under optimum conditions and as the authors indicate, "optimum" is extremely rare.
