EC, I am pro mining. when I ran for the state legislature I ran as a pro mining person and the liberals in my town still hate me for it.

My favorite thinker Michael Kinsley said liberals run down heretics and conservaties try to convince people to conform. I agree and I can say that as I am a super liberal and so is Kinsley.

Still, the lead from many mines has permanently lowered the IQ's of children in many mining towns across the country, Many, many towns with that problem. Dioxin is a problem in many places and black lung disease is pervasive, lake Erie once caught fire and 1/2 of the ground water in the US cannot be safely drunk.

But there has to be a happy medium and I will be the first to admit liberals tend to be zealots and hypocrits about mining. Conservatives on the other hand, see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil.

We need resources to live and we cannot allow child sweat shops or massive pollution. Our ability for compassion and empathy may not be adequate to save civilization.
