Wonder if todays news of Oracle8i Lite might somehow have a positive effect on IDX?
(COMTEX) B: ORACLE: Oracle outlines roadmap for Oracle8i Lite B: ORACLE: Oracle outlines roadmap for Oracle8i Lite MAY 19, 1999, M2 Communications - Continuing to gain momentum in the market for mobile databases and information systems, Oracle today outlined an aggressive roadmap for Oracle8i Lite, the Internet platform for mobile computing. The roadmap details product plans in three key emerging database markets - mobile, embedded and information appliance applications. Unlike other vendors who only provide partial mobile solutions, Oracle is the only vendor to offer technology across each of these key markets. Oracle8i Lite will ship next month. The roadmap for Oracle8i Lite includes: * Extending Mobile Support to Linux - Oracle plans to extend the Oracle Internet platform for mobile computing to the Linux operating system by delivering Oracle8i Lite for Linux, the first mobile computing platform for the open source community * Scaling Up Embedded Computing Applications to Support Multiple Users - Currently, embedded applications are limited to single users. Oracle plans to deliver a 2-10 user, 'mini-server' version of Oracle8i Lite in the second half of 1999, making Oracle the first vendor to deliver a small footprint, no administration, multi-user database for embedded computing * Information Appliance Applications Take Web Applications on the Go - Oracle's Project Panama, announced earlier this year, is the only product to provide a wireless portal service that accesses Web content from any information appliance. Later this year, Oracle will extend the Oracle Internet platform to wireless devices by combining Project Panama with Oracle8i Lite. This combination will provide direct offline access to Internet applications from any information appliance. "Enterprise application systems are no longer confined to the office. Advances in wireless communications and microelectronics now allow us to extend the corporate systems to remote and mobile devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, vending machines, field test equipment and utility meters," said Anne Thomas of the Patricia Seybold Group. "I envisage Oracle8i Lite powering a number of mobile application systems that could significantly improve efficiency and reduce operational costs. Oracle has hit all the bases with an extremely small footprint, optimised replication capabilities and turnkey synchronisation services." "Oracle has gained market share rapidly because we are the only vendor to offer a solution that goes seamlessly from handheld to enterprise," said Nick Gregory, product marketing manager, Oracle UK. "We are very focused on extending Oralce8i Lite's scalability, flexibility and functionality to the emerging mobile, embedded and information appliance markets." Oracle8i Lite is the only small-footprint database built from the ground up specifically for mobile computing. Oracle8i Lite seamlessly extends the Internet to both mobile disconnected users and wireless connected users. The most complete and comprehensive platform for building, deploying and managing mobile Web applications, Oracle8i Lite will include three major new components which can be used individually or in combination, depending on the application. * Oracle Lite - a small footprint Java-enabled database built for laptops, handheld computers, PDAs, cell phones and information appliances * Web-to-Go - extends the Oracle Internet platform to mobile computing by allowing Web applications to be centrally developed, remotely deployed and professionally managed * IConnect - a flexible architecture that enables reliable and scalable bi-directional synchronisation of data and applications between mobile devices, Oracle Lite and central database servers.
