Gateway Offers Unlimited Internet Access for $16.95

North Sioux City, South Dakota, March 9 (Bloomberg) --
Gateway 2000 Inc. is offering unlimited Internet access for a
monthly fee of $16.95, lower than almost all major Internet
providers, in an effort to boost sales of the service.

The personal computer retailer builds its machines to order
and sells them direct to customers. Since November, Gateway's
computers include software for its Internet service, and now it's
gunning for more business by undercutting the price of such
companies as No. 1 online service provider America Online Inc.

Gateway's move reflects increasing competition in an
industry that's expected to almost double the number of users in
the next five years. It joins companies such as MCI
Communications Corp. and EarthLink Network Inc., which are wooing
AOL customers by touting their lower prices.

''There are more choices for customers. The trick for AOL is
to make sure they keep their hooks in their customers,'' said
Forrester Research analyst Kate Delhagen.

North Sioux City, South Dakota-based Gateway 2000 will make
money from both the Internet service fees and marketing products
to customers who use the service, Delhagen said.

''Longer term, they'll be able to make all sorts of offers
and get better consumer loyalty,'' she said.

Gateway also offers a $9.95 plan for 20 hours of Internet
access a month. Gateway shares fell 1 7/16 to 36 1/4.
