C Kahn,

For Americans, I think some records will be classics as importantly as the song itself. "I Get Around" by the Beach Boys (Brian Wilson) is one, IMHO. Also, "I Got You" by James Brown (James Brown), Elvis doing "Hound Dog" (Leiber/Stoller) and "Blue Suede Shoes" (Carl Perkins), "No Woman No Cry" by Bob Marley, and Frank Sinatra singing "Witchcraft" (Cy Coleman/Carolyn Leigh ?).

"Your Song" by Elton John/Bernie Taupin is a classic, stand-alone song, I think. And I've always said that "Holding Back the Years" by Mick Hucknall of Simply Red has all the hallmarks of a Standard. Can't say that it's reached that pinnacle yet, though.

And don't forget "Hootchie Cootchie Man" by Muddy Waters!

More to come.........
