Entitled "Bandwidth Quest"
techweb.cmp.com
Some quotes:
"Bell Communications Research Inc., the research arm of the regional Bells, sees demand for bandwidth increasing at least 20-fold in the next five to 10 years."
Later in the article:
"In fact, DSL technology is so hot, some analysts predict it could one day replace frame relay for linking branch offices to corporate locations. But DSL isn't perfect. For one, it doesn't work in about 20% of all networks until carriers remove "loading coils" that extend the distance a signal can travel. At 1.54 Mbps, DSL's performance degrades in locations more than 18,000 feet from a central switching office. "
On the Other Hand...
"Still, Richard McGinn, president and chief operating officer of Lucent Technologies, one of the largest providers of telephone office equipment, believes DSL technology will last only two or three years before the carriers have trouble scaling it and integrating it into existing network systems. "This is their last gasp" to use their existing network, he says. Long term, McGinn is betting on broadband wireless technologies."
Something to consider, I guess.
