When society breaks down and people are removed from the social order, the natural state of man emerges ... and no matter what Rosseau tells you, it ain't a pretty sight.

I think this tells us that when the sensible people heed the warning to get out of town, the ones who remain tend to be ones that are not so sensible.

The ones who remain include the stubborn, the feckless, the old, the ill, the poorest of the poor, the insane, and the ones I call "id monsters."

When the constraints are removed, it's the "id monsters" who cause the trouble. The "super ego" types have all moved to higher ground. (Except for nurses and so forth who remained at their posts. God bless them and save them.)
