NEC to open Linux PC cluster center

NEC IS OPENING this Friday in Tokyo a high-performance computing engineering center for Linux-based PC cluster systems, the company announced.

The new center will be equipped with a 64-node cluster system running Linux. Each node will be an NEC Express 5800 server based on two Intel Pentium III processors.

The system will be available for use by third parties for the porting, testing and enhancement of software designed to operate on such parallel computers. Based on standard Linux clustering software such as Beowulf or SCore, the system will also be available for benchmarking, said NEC.

Coinciding with the launch of the center and this week's Linux World Expo Tokyo trade show, NEC will also begin selling an Express 5800/Parallel PC Cluster system consisting of rack-mounted servers with clustering software pre-installed and networked using Ethernet or Myrinet.

NEC has been involved in the Japanese Government's SCore project which developed a parallel cluster system software application. Backed by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the project recently achieved a Linpack-benchmark performance of 580G Flops using a 512-node, 1,024 processor computer based on NEC Express 5800 servers.
