Actually, the best measurements we have indicate that the earth and all the outer planets (I don't know about the innermost ones) are 'oblate spheroids'. Their rotation widens them slightly at the equator, and flattens them at the poles... in the case of the earth, the polar diameter is 12,640 km and the equatorial diameter is 12,756 km.
So, in vertical cross-section, the earth would indeed be (very) slightly oval.

It's most noticeable on the gas giants - Jupiter/Saturn - because they rotate fastest and have the least solid structures.

As for evolution, just because something evolves later does not make it the pinnacle, nor any more likely to survive if behaviour proves unsuitable for its environment...
