The space race thing was a factor. Nobody will ever know how far that would have gone if not for Kennedy's blessing. I have heard that snippet of the speech more times than I can count.

What is interesting is the difference between the economic impact to the US economy and to the Russian economy. Perhaps the US benefitted more because the technology was rapidly commercialized and in Russia it was probably held under tight wraps. Another reason is that the US did more pure innovation. The last big cause might have been that the Russians cheated.*

*Yes the Russians made certain milestones, but most were ordered by the Kremlin when they were in diplomatic crisis, and they Jerry Rigged to get the publicity without really making the milestone. Think refitting a two person capsule to fit three, while the US was stuck on making a three person capsule that could carry men to the moon and back.
