I will say though that despite the price my daughter's MacBook is very very nice. much nicer than my two dying Dells :O) but I can get a Dell and a nice tablet for its price.
What I've found is that while Mac notebooks cost somewhat more upfront, they also have a longer useful lifespan. The MacBook Pro I'm writing this on just passed out of its 3 years of AppleCare, and it's still going strong. I upgraded the hard drive to 750GB last year.

It's still a fast, responsive, reliable system. It's capable of running Mountain Lion. I never had a Windows notebook that didn't feel clunky and old within a year and a half.
