Re: [AMD] Can't even get Compaq (or IBM) on board with a little 2-way server

Too true.

OTOH, it did force Intel to cut the net OEM price of each of the several million Coppermine and Foster (P4 server) chips in the Xeon family that will be sold this year from what was $1,000 to $3,000 to what now is $300 to $1,000.

Cost to develop, produce, and market the new Xeons stays where it would have been (or goes up to counter competition) while revenue drops by something like $4 Billion.

That's one of the reasons why Intel will lose money this year and next year, and why they can't give away desktop chips to crush AMD anymore.

Of course, AMD won't be getting rich, either. Nor will they be going away.

It's a new world out there for Intel, and, judging by the past 2 quarters, they haven't been adapting to it very well.
