I've never agreed that we are a Christian nation either. There was that feverish Protestant revival in the early 19th century, but the founders were, as you say, deists, and Freemasons as well. The country was a masonic country at its founding. It was not Christian, but there was still a belief system that revolved around the Light-bearer, whoever that was supposed to be. I'm against prayer in public school, too. Who would these NEA dimbulbs have the kids pray to? Gaia? Pan? Beelzebub? I wouldn't worry too much about the Christian right ever gaining a firm foothold, they are descendants of Calvinists, Wesleyans, and Puritans. As such they are in error and doomed to failure.
