Any thoughts on Ga and RFMD? Just that Ga and SiGe and other technologies coming down the pike, such as airfiberinc.com all make CDMA by Mighty Q! even higher performing and cheaper.

With the latest directional antennae to divvy up the spectrum into narrow sectors, the spectrum advantage of HDR CDMA over the old analogue systems is going to roar past 40:1.

As Clark points out, that's not quite the same thing as CDMA being better than analogue by that amount, since the same technology could be applied to analogue. Nevertheless, it does show the huge improvement in spectrum use which has taken place over the past 10 years. It also means the spectrum becomes more valuable - in that a company, such as NextWave, can put a lot more through 10MHz and they can do it in the less than 2GHz range, so they get better building penetration. No need to use higher frequencies which aren't as good.

Maybe the 800MHz cellular bands will be the big data providers as they convert from analogue to CDMA. 800MHz for the mobile link with lasers to a nearby spot from fibre main trunks.

Never heard of RFMD sorry.

Incidentally, Australia has been turning off their analogue networks over the past week or two, though a few remain to cover rural areas until CDMA can be made ready. There's also some GSM.

The Nortel 'Boomer' base stations will help out too. 150km is pretty good coverage!

Australasia is the model for the CDMA/GSM/Analogue/TDMA wars, with TDMA and analogue already declared losers.

TDMA will be abandoned in NZ by Telecom NZ in favour of CDMA in the next year or two, [though I suppose they'll keep the TDMA stuff running for a while until the customer numbers drop enough to shut it]. Analogue will be dumped in both NZ and Australia.
