Ref <What about order entry, inventory management, production....etc, where most of the IT dollars are budgeted. I think those require a longer lead time for transitioning to an IA64 platform. My guess is that Intel has not even started to think of migrating all those applications to an IA64 platform. >

I believe that Intel IT may already have been working in that direction , although I do not know how far along they are. Based upon Tench's post most of engineering is done on LINUX based machines, and that was probably a big gamble because the Willamette design was contingent on LINUX working smoothly.

It pays to have in house feedback on the products you make. I also think that the Internet Service Centers will also provide useful feedback for XEONS and ITANIUMs
