I understand historical context- but in all times there are people able to rise above that, and who can see what the most humane solution would be. You can read ancient Greeks, or medieval scholars, or Renaissance thinkers who all could have honed in on what the most logical, and least humanly destructive, course of action would be. I don't know why there are always people like that around, but there are.

When we look back, those are the men (and women) who stand out (along with the tyrants who we remember for the bestial natures). They are the people who refuse to give in to prejudice based on race, religion or politics. They are the people who don't buy in to witch hunts and revenge thinking. They are the anti- primitives. I guess I wouldn't call it good or bad- I would say "Do you want to give in to your primordial instincts, or do you want to try for something else?"

It's not that being a caveman can't sometimes bring you some success, but I don't want to live that way, hence my differing calculus. I don't think it's a "higher" moral plane- it's merely a different one.
