've always found it curious that there is so little government
funding for fusion power research and so much for other so called alternative
energy schemes like corn-to-ethanol.

It is simple. There are lots of corn farmers and they vote in blocs and they give money to their lobbies, which are very effective.

OTOH, nuclear physicists are few and far between and they have no lobby.
