Re: Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat said he would accept the Israeli proposal if it had President George W Bush's backing and Israel pulled out of Palestinian territories.

"Any initiative which would be declared by President Bush I will accept it to achieve peace... I am ready for an immediate conference, but at the same time immediate withdrawal," he told an American broadcaster.

That's an astute reply by Chairman Arafat.... He senses that the wind is turning and delivers a two-fold message:

#1) That idea of an international conference was not his, hence, Sharon is not merely endorsing a proposal first floated by Arafat and then conveyed to him by Powell. Quite the contrary: Arafat and the Palestinian leadership are just fine with a 100%-US stewardship to move forward.

#2) By hedging himself behind President Bush, Arafat avoids antagonizing the Europeans... He's quite aware that the Israelis' conference thing is Europe's last hope to escape total irrelevance (at least in the ME). Yet, Arafat also knows that Prez Bush is not gung-ho about co-opting the Europeans in the process. Therefore, his linking his own opinion with Bush's is a roundabout way for him to say, "I don't give a toss about that conference stuff" --without vexing Europe's Judeofascists....
