The important thing is retailers moved a lot of inventory and raised $10.6 billion cash that day. Profits can wait but cash cannot wait.

Anyway sure the market may sell off but still it's surprising to see any numbers higher than last year, so it's a piece of information worth stopping to think about. And given how deep the discounts, the volume must have been really high to make up a higher dollar amount.
