The reason Intel's margins were so high in 2000 was that there was a processor shortage. As the shortage collapsed due to a weakening economy, margins also collapsed. Intel might have been able to restore margins had demand shifted to P4 as planned, but with the dismal response to their P4 price cuts, margins for Q2 should be very poor. OTOH, there is always some chance that P4 demand will pick up with the availability of the i845 chipset, thus allowing margins to bounce back somewhat.
