Reagan presided over the end of the Cold War. He did not defeat the USSR. He merely continued Carter's SALT diplomacy and being a much better diplomat than GW Bush (who isn't?) he joined with our allies all over and pressured the USSR.

Reagan's famous speech at the Berlin Wall was after the fact. The USSR had already fallen on its own. The US did not make it happen though we certainly influenced it, and 100% of Americans were united on doing that. If Carter had gotten re-elected he would have presided over it.

But 90% of it was internal, Gorbachev, Walesa and all the other heros.

ANother thing to remember is that the ideal of socialism was never a bad thing. But the USSR turned communism and socialism into tyranny. That is actually the opposite of what socialism is supposed to be. Just look at any European country or Canada. Their governments are much less corrupt than ours. And corruption has risen 1000% since Bush-Cheney cheated to win and get into power. It is much worse than any of us have heard about yet. We are talking trillions of dollars stolen and our entire democracy undermined.
