Government can sometimes be efficient and certain forms of transferring input A in to output B, with less per dollar or per person overhead, at least if the government does it in a big way and their are major economies of scale involved. What it is less efficient at is making sure that output B, meets a real demand, and a demand that would still exist if the costs for input A where considered and paid for by the people receiving output B.

And there are things that would be terribly inefficient if attempted by the private sector because of their (rightful) self interest. Building an Interstate highway is an example. Providing business and residential water is another.... there are 1000's.
