The war exposed certain deficiencies in some IDF units. Perhaps it also showed that Hezbollah fighters did a better job than what we have usually seen from Arab armies. But the main thing it showed was strategic indecisiveness from Israel's national leadership.

It can be debated whether the US invasion of Iraq, or the Israeli campaign in Lebanon were good ideas or not, but the fact that 3,000 or so dead Americans can bring a lot of support for ending the war ASAP, and that a much smaller number of dead Israelis can cause Israel to end a campaign that started when it was directly attacked is troubling. If you want to take the position that the wars where not a good idea than you can say they shouldn't have been started. But once their started the fact that such a small number of casualties can cause second thoughts would seem to encourage real and potential enemies. The US and Israeli military have hardly "gone soft", but have the civilian population and parts of the civilian leadership?
