Young, we just have to agree to disagree on this very minor point. I still believe that CD-ROMs will become absolete when we all start to download our software via the Web one day in the future.

I understand your point about consumer preference to pay an extra $5 to end up with a Zip disk, but I don't think companies think in concert about these things. Softkey has built an entire business around selling $10-12 titles in supermarkets (though you and I know those are junk). They can only do that type of pricing when manufacturing costs are very low.

Besides, I don't think any of this is very important. I personally believe the future PC sale model should be that of Gateway's. Just build according to specs. So, CD-ROMs may disappear when everyone starts ordering PCs without CD-ROMs. But that will happen when the consumer knows that he/she can get the software without relying on those. So, it's sort of a catch-22 for the near future (a couple of years at least)....
