An "asset play" is where a company has some asset that is worth
considerably more than what is listed on the books. Usually
this would be Real Estate. In the example of AIMM, you have
as assets: cash, a few PhD's, and some great ideas. Since
the smart people and the great ideas are harder to value, we
write them off and we're left with the cash. Just the money
and no products. The company is currently priced slightly
below the book value that will soon be burned up anyways.
Hardly an asset play. I've got better places to burn my
cash :)
