Linux needs "support" contracts because Chief Information Officers are idiots.

The whole point to a "support" contract is that you pay someone a lot of money, and when the s*** hits the fan, they bite the bullet instead of you.

I used to work in technical support for a large IT consultancy. We had a Microsoft support contract. In reality, all it meant was that when we had major problems with MS software, instead of getting fired for not being able to solve the problem, we could say, "We've notified the people we wrote a really big check to, and they can't solve the problem."

It's all about the perception of reality and not reality itself.
