This week’s report is short … not sweet though, not bitter, just more of the thin gruel that has been all too typical since May.
Because SOMEONE decided that just because we can’t manage to govern ourselves meant that our bonds are slightly more risky, what started as a good week turned kinda bad. The NASDAQ composite shed almost -3%, and this time the biotech indices were not contra-indicaters, off -1.5% for the NASDAQ Composite, and the S&P Composite was -3% in the red.
For the individuals stocks this week, the top performers were not huge, but they were in the black. The winner is RFL, up +25% for the week, apparently because they took a $5 million private placement for 4 million shares in the company CYTH, about a quarter of its float. AEON, the subject of my disquisition last week on the merits of SPACs, was in fourth, up +15% of its initial price for this year, Bouncing back from last week’s close ($6.50) to $7.90, the providers of the recent capital infusion are now above water.
This week’s big loser, TGTX -76% for the week, was essentially giving back the decent gains made during much of the past half year. At the end of last week it released “disappointing” quarterly earnings. Last week’s big winner, URGN, thanks to positive phase 3 trial results, gave back -22% of its initial price this week. It dropped behind PRVB in the YTD rankings, but is still in the YTD winner’s list, which it joined for the first time only last week, at number five.
Only four portfolios were in the black for the week, with the average portfolio dropping another -$2.2k. The average portfolio is still net positive YTD, +$1.5k, just, but this is mostly due to the strong performance of the top five contestants’ portfolios, consistent with a YTD median portfolio losing -$6.1k YTD.
From the general to the specific, the top performing portfolio for the week was BULBAMAN, +$3k, which was due to earning +$3.8k from RFL. In the same way, second place DEW DILIGENCE’s second place (+$1.6k) was dominated by this week’s bounce in AEON earning him +$1.5k. Third place RKRW (+$1.3k, thanks to KALV) returned to fourth place in the YTD rankings. BLADERUNNER was able to move closer to ALONER in the top YTD spot, now only separated by $4.6k.
