Re: You're quite right. The difference is that AMD doesn't consider managing investment portfolios to be one of its core competencies. You'd think Intel's employee retirement funds would be big enough that they could drive a hard bargain with Vanguard and get them to do it. It's another example of the Barrett/Bryant team fiddling while Rome burns.

I would agree that investment portfolio management is not one of AMD's strengths. But as most people know Intel took advantage of the Internet bubble and realized tremendous investment gains.

If Intel could have reduced costs by contracting out investment work, you better believe they would have done it. Several years ago they switched their internal management of the stock option program to Merrill Lynch (and recently switched again to UBS Paine Webber), and the retirement program is also outsourced to Fidelity (I think).
