Did you read Michael Moore's FOIA suit, asking why the "restricted items" list for airlines did not include butane lighters and matches? It did at first in the list presented to the White House by the airlines and FAA. It was DELETED by the White House coincidently giving the "shoe bomber" a chance to try lighting his shoe-bomb.

No, I missed it. Though when I took a trip to the States a few weeks ago, a butane lighter was listed as a prohibited item for US travel [and only travel to the US]. I threw it in my carry on [still prohibited] and made it through all the screens. In the US [Newark] it was particularly interesting. My carry-on was full of wires and little electrical gadgets, a bottle of water and my butane lighter. They stopped me at the screen point; asked me to open my carry on; called some additional security personnel over and asked, what's in the bottle?. I held it up and said water.. They never touched the bottle, never examined the bottle or the rest of my carry on closely, nadda...just said ok. It could have been nitro for all they knew. But they had more security personnel than I've ever seen. Good job guys and gals.

IMO, the additional security is all smoke and mirrors, nothing has substantially changed.
