NEW YORK -- Despite lower earnings expectations for technology companies including Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ), it's not the end for technology stocks - just the beginning of a reality check, according to Richard Cripps, chief market strategist Legg Mason Wood Walker.

"It's clearly an area that's just coming down to reality," Cripps told CNBC Monday.

Cripps added he doesn't expect technology to drive the market in the near term. He also urged investors to wait for a possible pull-back before buying.

Technology aside, Cripps said he likes the property and casualty industry, including Allstate Corp. (ALL).

His other stock picks were Wells Fargo & Co. (WFC), AlliedSignal Inc. (ALD), Caterpillar Inc. (CAT) and Electronic Data Systems (EDS).
