New York Times Op-Ed Page Update

Media Blog
Stephen Spruiell Reporting

In case you were lucky and you missed it, you might not have noticed that four New York Times op-ed columnists wrote the same column this week. Bob Herbert, Frank Rich, Maureen Dowd and Paul Krugman each wrote the same “Blame Bush” column. The only differences were the slight variations on the Bush-hating theme that pervades the paper. Each columnist took the occasion of a horrible tragedy to advance his or her own thesis on how Bush is ruining the country.

Allow me to paraphrase:

Bob Herbert
: Mr. Bush’s failure of leadership in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina proved once again that his administration is dedicated to turning back the clock on civil rights.

Paul Krugman
: Of course, the failure of leadership on the part of the Bush administration is the result of their blind faith in the free market. The sluggish reaction of the massive homeland security bureaucracy is proof that we need bigger government.

Frank Rich
: Mr. Bush’s rhetoric on Friday was certainly McCarthyesque, but it won’t save him from losing the country the way Johnson did at the height of Vietnam. Welcome to Watergate.

Maureen Dowd
: Here was W., ready to rock you like a hurricane. But unlike the 1984 Scorpions hit, W.’s empty rhetoric didn’t rock at all.

Why didn’t they save a lot of time and effort and just write one big op-ed with all their names at the bottom?
